Position Description

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) perform basic restorative services and basic nursing services which are directed at the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, basic mental health and protection of patient rights in accordance with the Patient’s Bill of Rights and within the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.

At the direction and under the immediate supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, incumbents function in a trainee capacity and perform tasks for which they are currently receiving training in a formal Certified Nursing Assistant program. 

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services, Southern Nevada State Veterans Home (SNSVH) located in Boulder City, Nevada is recruiting for Nursing Assistant Trainee positions (underfill for Certified Nursing Assistant 2). Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, incumbents provide personal care which includes assisting the residents with activities of daily living in accordance with SNSVH policy and procedures and the Nevada Nurse Practice Act. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities required in this occupation. At the direction and under immediate supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, incumbents function in a trainee capacity and perform tasks for which they are currently receiving training in a formal Certified Nursing Assistant program. As prescribed by the Nevada State Board of Nursing, at least 16 hours of instruction in the classroom must be completed before a trainee is directly involved with a patient. The Nursing Assistant Trainee provides personal care, monitoring and reporting of vital signs, ensures adequate hydration and nutrition, documents the care given, and responds to resident's requests and needs. Progression to the Certified Nursing Assistant 1 and 2 levels may occur upon meeting minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the approval of the appointing authority. This is a 24-hour facility; therefore, applicants may be required to work shift work.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment in a formal training program required for certification as a nursing assistant which has been approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing; OR completion of a formal Certified Nursing Assistant training program approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing with results of the certification examination pending. (In accordance with 42 CFR 483.75 (e)(2) (1998) an individual may retain Nursing Assistant Trainee status without certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant from the State of Nevada Board of Nursing for no more than four months, on a full-time basis.)

  • The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066 some positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a preemployment screening for controlled substances.
Some positions require current CPR certification at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
