Position Description

Information Technology (IT) Professionals analyze, develop, implement, maintain, and modify computer operations, systems, networks, databases, applications, and/or information security. Incumbents may perform duties in one or more IT specialization areas depending on the needs of the agency.

The Nevada Secretary of State’s office is seeking applicants with a passion for Information Technology and has an opening in Carson City, Nevada. Carson City is nestled just minutes from the world-famous Lake Tahoe, electrifying Reno, historic Virginia City, and the Majestic Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The selected candidate will work with a small but progressive and diverse team that has a statewide impact. Systems that are critical to State supported by our team include the SilverFlume Business Portal, Voter Registration systems, Election Night Reporting, and Securities Division law enforcement solutions.

The selected incumbent will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting existing Microsoft .NET web applications and JAVA applications within the Operational Division of the Nevada Secretary of State Information Technology Department.

Applicants should have knowledge in one or more of the following areas: C# .NET or VB.NET, Java, J2EE, JSP, JQuery, Hibernate, Stripe framework, Spring Framework, MS SQL Server, JavaScript, client/server model, and object-oriented programming. Knowledge of ASP.Net web forms, WCF (Windows Communication Foundation), and Team Foundation Server would be beneficial.

This is a full-time position that may include a variable work agreement that will be scheduled to work hours and days different than 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday such as swing shift and weekends, with overtime after 40 hours per week. Incumbents perform advanced journey level duties and may train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of subordinate staff and/or serve as a project leader as assigned. Incumbents may function as a unit leader to include directing the activities of a branch IT support unit, overseeing projects of limited scope, and coordinating activities with other work groups.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, management information systems, or closely related field and three years of progressively responsible professional IT experience relevant to the duties of the position which may include computer operations, systems administration, network administration, database administration, applications analyst and development, and/or information security, one year of which was at the journey level; OR one year of relevant experience as an IT Professional II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Special Requirements

  • Applicants must be willing to work standby and carry the standby cellular phone for evening and weekend system troubleshooting.
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for continued employment.
  • Statewide travel is required.

  • A pre-employment State of Nevada FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
