Position Description

 

The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Mental Health Counselor II at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City, Nevada. The incumbent will be responsible for providing counseling services, case management, direct client services, program development, and behavioral/human services to the mentally ill and intellectually disabled. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Mental Health Counselors conduct appraisals and assessments through interviews with the client, family members and community systems, personal observations, communication with clinicians and representatives of community agencies and organizations, and utilization of standardized techniques to determine client eligibility for services and appropriate course of treatment at the least restrictive level possible. Conduct or participate in treatment planning by attending treatment team meetings in which client goals are determined, and appropriate strategies and plans are developed and modified as necessary; coordinate and integrate services among members of treatment teams and client support systems; monitor treatment plans and evaluate effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work or closely related academic field and two years of post-master's degree professional mental health counseling experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience at or above a Master's degree and experience as described above.

  • The exam will consist of an application and resume evaluation. It is essential that applications/resumes include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Special Requirements

  • A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
  • Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
  • Licensure or certification as a Mental Health Counselor, Certified Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, or Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor issued by the appropriate licensing or certification authority is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
  • A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
