Position Description
Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify fleet equipment comprised of a variety of light, medium, and heavy automotive and maintenance equipment, landscape equipment, computerized testing equipment, and diesel-fueled electric power generators. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Under direct supervision, Equipment Mechanic IIs maintain, repair, and modify light, medium (GVWR 10,500-26,000 lbs.) and heavy (GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs.) wildland firefighting and resource equipment. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. This position is located at the Elko Regional Shop. Incumbent is typically involved in the inspection, maintenance, repair and modification of light, medium and heavy wildland firefighting and resource equipment including cars, light pickups, medium duty trucks, crew carriers, fire engines, water tenders, tandem axle dump trucks, motor graders, bulldozers, front end loaders, tractor/trailer combinations, chippers, yarders, masticators, and ATV/UTVs. Repairs and service may be done in a repair shop or in the field. Incumbents may provide training work direction, and review to semi-skilled equipment shop staff such as Equipment Mechanic I’s and inmate workers. This is journeyman level in the series.
Due to the emergency service mission of the Division, the incumbent may be asked to work extended shifts, holidays and/or weekends. Computer and database experience is a plus. Applicants will be required to undergo a Nevada Cepartmetn of Corrections (NDOC) background investigation prior to be considered for employment. if hired the applicant must complete a 40-hr pre-service training in supervision of inmates. In addition, a Class A is required within 1 year of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program; OR completion of the Equipment Mechanic-In-Training program in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
