Position Description

Correctional Nurse II works under the supervision of the Correctional Nurse III and will consult with them on a regular basis. They will communicate plans with team members by attending nursing meetings and sharing with other team members. Assist with team responsibilities and assignments as necessary. Use patient problems to plan patient care addressing chief presenting problems incorporating the plan of nursing care into the multidisciplinary treatment plan. Collect/document the medical/mental health conditions of patients using appropriate charting protocols. Complete health assessments. Collect statistical date, tracking current outpatient medications and patient outcome. Review inmates to determine need for referrals or assessment. re accounted for and lost keys or tool are reported immediately to Supply Tech II; observe all safety practices at all times.

They will follow NDOC’s Personnel Code of Ethic outlined in AR339. Observe all safety practices at all times for the safely of self and others. Follow Department accident reporting procedures. Comply with all OSHA guidelines.

They will be working directly with inmates to carry out nursing care assignments, promote optimal health and patient independence, document problems requiring nursing interventions, document patient teaching needs and discharge planning, communicate care plans to other nurses to maintain continuity of care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • "License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above."

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability in all knowledge, skills and abilities required at the lower levels.
Working knowledge of operation and use of standard medical equipment.
Working knowledge of application of the nursing process including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
Ability to provide nursing services within the limitations and security requirements of a correctional environment.
Ability to independently perform specialized assignments such as infection control, quality assurance, utilization review, staff training, and/or outpatient services.
Working knowledge of routine laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
Working knowledge of nursing principles and therapeutic interventions utilized in cooperation with a treatment team and physician or designee.
General knowledge of quality assurance and/or utilization review audit and compliance activities including applicable regulatory standards.
Working knowledge of human growth and development.
Working knowledge of nutrition and personal hygiene as applied to patient care.
Ability to respond to and resolve patient care issues.
General knowledge of staff education and training techniques.
Working knowledge of physical restraint techniques and procedures as allowed in the practices.
Working knowledge of documentation process.
Working knowledge of uses and effects of medications used in the practice setting.
