Position Description

 

Curators perform a broad range of professional and technical museum work involving, but not limited to, assessment, evaluation, survey, inventory, preservation, research, education and planning for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.

The Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas (NSMLV) in the Division of Museums and History within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Natural History Curator.  The NSMLV is a public visitor and educational institution that incorporates the functions of a flagship cultural and natural history museum, exhibits and programs venue, research library and archive academic research, and educational offerings for all ages.  The incumbent maintains the biological including entomological, botanical, zoological collections, paleontological including invertebrate and federally owned vertebrate collections, geological, and archaeological collection and authenticates and collects items of significance in those fields. Provides expert knowledge for queries from the press, public, governmental agencies, and provides expertise for natural history exhibits and other educational programming. Seeks extramural funding to support Natural History collections, exhibitions, and community engagement and programs. Knowledge of federal and state laws, federal and state permitting, and ethical collection standards is encouraged.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others, including interns and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies, education, or closely related field plus two years of professional experience in a museum. This experience must have included experience in exhibit development, and collections registration, and/or developing, promoting, executing and evaluating educational programming; OR one year of experience as a Curator I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
