Position Description

This is a Safety Associate, Boiler position underfilling for the Safety Specialist in Reno, NV. Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by federal and State safety and health laws and regulations. Incumbents identify or train others to identify safety and health hazards and violations, and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement; research specific technology and industry applications using technical references and applicable codes and standards; prepare written reports and/or training materials; make public presentations to promote knowledge of safety issues among the public and industry groups; maintain current knowledge of new technologies, standards, codes, rules and regulations.

This position is with the Department of Business & Industry, Division of Industrial Relations, Mechanical Compliance Section (MCS) in Reno. This position will report to the Boiler Safety Supervisor: Boiler Safety Representatives will under close supervision, receive training in, and perform the following: promote recognized safety practices among businesses throughout Nevada covered by State and federal safety and health laws, and regulations. Incumbents will train to perform safety inspections of boilers, pressure vessels, and related equipment and prepare written reports using technical references and applicable codes and standards; Position will train to Investigate all accidents and complaints concerning boilers and related equipment which include interviewing complainants/witnesses, inspecting equipment, determining cause and appropriate method of correction; Position will train and learn  to provide technical assistance in response to inquiries from designers, constructors, architects, owners, users, service and repair organizations. Incumbents may be required to work shifts other than 7:00am to 4:00pm, to include nights/weekends and Holidays. Incumbent will be required to use State vehicle to conduct State business. Persons interested in this position should have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, have exceptional organizational and analytical skills, and possess the ability to provide quality and professional customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or trade school in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field and one year of experience in the building trades; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Architectural/Engineering Drafter II, Engineering Drafter III, Engineering Technician III, Heat Plant Specialist I, Maintenance Repair Specialist I, or Plumber I in Nevada State service; OR two years of experience as a Maintenance Repair Worker III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Special Requirements

  • Incumbents may be required to travel to out-of-state locations to attend the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors conferences, seminars, trainings and meetings.
  • Positions may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Positions may require statewide travel.
  • This position is subject to standby/call back.
