Position Description

This is a Boiler Safety Specialist position with the Department of Business & Industry, Division of Industrial Relations, Mechanical Compliance Section (MCS) in Las Vegas. This position will report to the Boiler Safety Supervisor: Boiler Safety Specialists will perform the following: promote recognized safety practices among businesses throughout Nevada covered by State and federal safety and health laws, and regulations. Incumbents will perform safety inspections of boilers, pressure vessels, and related equipment and prepare written reports using technical references and applicable codes and standards; Position will Investigate all accidents and complaints concerning boilers and related equipment which include interviewing complainants/witnesses, inspecting equipment, determining cause and appropriate method of correction; Position will provide technical assistance in response to inquiries from designers, constructors, architects, owners, users, service and repair organizations. Incumbents may be required to work shifts other than 7:00am to 4:00pm, to include nights/weekends and Holidays. Incumbent will be required to use State vehicle to conduct State business. Persons interested in this position should have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, have exceptional organizational and analytical skills, and possess the ability to provide quality and professional customer service.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, occupational safety and health, construction management, or closely related field and two years of experience in the design, construction, repair or operation of high-pressure boilers and pressure vessels; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or trade school in engineering, occupational safety and health, construction management, or closely related field and three years of experience as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Safety Representative, Boiler - DIR in Nevada State service to include Commission as a National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

  • The exam will consist of an application and resume evaluation. It is essential that applications/resumes include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Informational Notes

  • For the Safety Supervisor and Safety Specialist, incumbents must obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Boiler Inspector’s Certificate of Competency within twelve months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Special Requirements

  • For the Safety Supervisor, Boiler - DIR and Safety Specialist, Boiler - DIR, Commission as a National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector is required at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Incumbents may be required to travel to out-of-state locations to attend the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors conferences, seminars, trainings and meetings.
  • Positions may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Positions may require statewide travel.
  • A valid driver's license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
