Position Description

 

Carpenters perform skilled carpentry work to maintain and repair buildings, structures, fixtures, furniture and equipment.

The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Carpenter II at Lovelock Correctional Center, in Lovelock, Nevada. This position is located in a correctional environment, and will function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis; document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports; implement work safety and security procedures to ensure efficient, secure and safe operation of the work unit and the security of assigned inmates, staff, buildings, tools and equipment in accordance with the Department of Corrections requirements and department policy; secure work areas from unauthorized inmates. This position is located in Lovelock, Nevada, approximately 90 miles north of Reno, Nevada on Interstate 80. Candidate must be willing to work at this location.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level carpenter experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

  • The exam will consist of an application and resume evaluation. It is essential that applications/resumes include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.

 

Special Requirements

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprint is required. Person's offered employment in this position will be required to pay for the fingerprinting.
A State of Nevada/FBI background check may be required of the selected applicant.

Ability to set priorities which reflect the relative importance of job assignments.
General knowledge of restoration methods and techniques applicable to historical buildings and antique furniture.
Ability in all knowledge, skills and abilities required at the lower levels.
Working knowledge of proper use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
General knowledge of cabinet making joints and the construction of cabinets and furniture.
General knowledge of agency policies and procedures pertaining to work unit operations.
Ability to prepare written work orders and specifications.
Ability to requisition supplies.
