Position Description

 

Tax Examiners are responsible for licensing/registration, collecting taxes and fees, and assisting taxpayers to ensure compliance with the applicable tax and registration statutes.

 

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

 

This position is within the Department's Motor Carrier Division, North Las Vegas office. This division is responsible for ensuring compliance with Nevada's Fuel Tax laws for special fuel users and motor fuel suppliers in an effort to collect and distribute the maximum tax revenue; responsible for the registration of all commercial vehicles, conducting audits of interstate commercial registrant motor carriers, fuel users, and fuel suppliers; and complying with the International Registration Plan (IRP) and the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA); responsible for the regulation of Motor Carriers and the Fuel Industry through customer service and education and the administration of Nevada's laws to ensure compliance. This position requires the incumbent to meet several hard deadlines throughout the year, multitask, problem solve, and successfully assist customers through face to face, telephone and email interaction The Tax Examiner is responsible for assisting commercial motor vehicle carriers with special fuel tax returns by applying the IFTA rules, the IRP, and Federal Motor Carrier regulations; assists Motor Carriers with licensing/annual renewal application requirements; title of commercial vehicles; verifying for accuracy, calculating and processing special fuel/IFTA tax and tax refunds; the ability to correctly calculate penalties, interest, fines and sanctions associated with delinquent payments and delinquent filing requirements; establishes and maintains strong working relationships with their out of state counterparts, and representatives of state agencies and local municipalities as well as other agency staff members. The Tax Examiner must possess good oral and written communication skills and will use these skills to make oral presentations and prepare written documents and reports as necessary; must possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently. Incumbents demonstrate knowledge of State and Federal Regulations relative to Motor Carrier including but not limited to the IRP, IFTA, NRS and NAC sections 365, 366, 371, 482 and 706. The selected candidate may be required to attend 2 to 4 weeks training in Carson City, NV.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university and one year experience in clerical accounting, collections, or the interpretation and application of policies, regulations and/or legal requirements equivalent to an Administrative Assistant II or Accounting Assistant II in Nevada State service; OR Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experiences as stated above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

Additional Real ID criteria provides that the DMV shall not employ a person if they have been convicted of a felony within 7 years of their application or if an applicant was released from incarceration for one of these crimes within five years of their application including Unlawful Firearm Violations, Extortion, Fraud, Bribery, Smuggling, Immigration Violations, Distribution of Controlled Substances, Arson, Kidnapping, Rape or Sexual Abuse, Assault With Intent to Kill, Robbery, or Fraudulent Seaport Entry.
