Position Description

 

Conservation Educators plan, organize, implement and evaluate educational programs designed to teach hunter and boating safety, environmental concepts and other wildlife related areas to the public, and participate in public relations activities.

 

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

The primary function of this position is the regional coordination of the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Hunter Education and Archery Education Programs for northwestern Nevada.  This position recruits, trains, supervises, and schedules volunteer instructors for education programs in the Western Region; maintains and tracks technical reports on student data and volunteer instructor hours for federal aid grants; and presents and develops conservation seminars and educational clinics. Public hunting and shooting sports education seminars could include antelope seminar, turkey seminar, hunting tag application seminar, youth hunts, National Archery in the Schools Program, and hunter education classes and clinics. The position leads agency participation in regional events such as the Wild Sheep Foundation expo, and writes for publications, helps with video efforts or radio presentations, and prepares visual aids and equipment. The position also assists with research or other writing projects; supports coordination efforts of all other regional coordinators. This position plans coordinates and hosts the statewide volunteer academy when it is located in the Western Region.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, journalism, communications, outdoor recreation/leadership/education, wildlife management, biology or related field and two years of professional experience in conservation education which included presenting educational programs, writing news releases, developing written materials for publication, providing interviews for print and broadcast media and/or preparing and presenting radio and television broadcasts; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Conservation Educator II in Nevada State service.

Special Requirements

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Occasional nights and/or weekends may be required.

  • A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
  • Statewide travel is required.
