Position Description

Conservation Educators plan, organize, implement and evaluate educational programs designed to teach hunter and boating safety, environmental concepts and other wildlife related areas to the public, and participate in public relations activities.

 

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

 

Coordinates and manages Wildlife Education and Volunteer Programs for northwestern Nevada. Coordinate, recruit, supervise, train, and schedule all Wildlife Education and volunteers in the Western Region. Coordinates, schedules and manages volunteer projects in the Western Region. Maintain and track technical reports on student visitation data and instructor volunteer hours for federal aid grants.

 

Manage and maintain the Oxbow Nature Study Area and Verdi Nature trail. Develop and present wildlife education and interpretive programs for children and adults at the Oxbow Nature Study Area and the Verdi Nature Center. Recruit, train, coordinate, supervise and schedule volunteer instructors and interpreters for the wildlife education program, and train volunteer leaders for scheduled projects. Plan and implement continuing maintenance of Oxbow and Verdi facilities. Lead Project WILD and Aquatic WILD classes. Participate in Trout in the Classroom training classes for teachers and participate in other Wildlife Education programs such as the Maison T. Ortiz camp. Take part in agency participation in regional events such as the Wild Sheep Foundation Expo. As assigned writes for publications, helps with videotaping efforts or radio presentations, and prepares visual aids and equipment. Also assists with research or other writing projects. Support coordination efforts of Statewide Wildlife Education Coordinator with planning and implementation of statewide Wildlife Education programming. Develop regional Wildlife Education and Volunteer budgets. Assist in maintaining the Trout in the Classroom Program (TIC).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, journalism, communications, outdoor recreation/leadership/education, wildlife management, biology or related field and two years of professional experience in conservation education which included presenting educational programs, writing news releases, developing written materials for publication, providing interviews for print and broadcast media and/or preparing and presenting radio and television broadcasts; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Conservation Educator II in Nevada State service.

Special Requirements

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Occasional nights and/or weekends may be required.

Statewide travel is required.
