Position Description

Fish Hatchery Supervisors manage the operations and maintenance of an assigned hatchery or fish rearing station, and plan, budget and perform maintenance activities in order to provide for an efficient operation and preserve wildlife resources.

 

Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. This position manages the operations and maintenance of a cold water fish hatchery; supervises a four person crew; develops work schedules; participates in the development of the stocking plan; implements the stocking plan; responsible for station fish health monitoring and treatment; conducts station operations consistent with agency and state purchasing and contracting policy and procedures; and is responsible for station security and public affairs at the Gallagher Fish Hatchery.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management, fishery or related field and three years of technical experience in wildlife management such as establishing and maintaining quality wildlife habitat to meet the needs of a variety of wildlife species; fish hatchery work that included caring for fish, fish eggs and transplanting fish; operating equipment to maintain suitable habitats of wildlife; and providing for security of wildlife management areas. One year of the above experience must have been in a leadworker capacity; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and five years of technical experience in wildlife management such as establishing and maintaining quality wildlife habitat to meet the needs of a variety of wildlife species; fish hatchery work that included caring for fish, fish eggs and transplanting fish One year of the above experience must have been in a leadworker capacity; OR an equivalent combination of education andexperience operating equipment to maintain suitable habitats of wildlife; and providing for security of wildlife management areas. One year of the above experience must have been in a leadworker capacity; OR one year of experience working as a Fish Hatchery Supervisor I or two years of experience as a Fish Hatchery Technician III in Nevada State service.

All positions in this series are required to respond to emergency situations which may occur during non working hours.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Restricted use Pesticide Applicator's Certificate is required as an ongoing condition of employment.
Incumbents in this series are required to reside in Department housing at the hatchery that is provided by the Department of Wildlife.
Positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement and air brake certification.
