Position Description

 

Highway Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify medium (GVWR 10,500-26,000 lbs.) and heavy (GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs.) highway maintenance and construction equipment.

 

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

 

This position is located within District I, Tonopah.  Incumbent will diagnose, maintain, modify, and repair Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) equipment and is responsible for keeping equipment in the sub-district's fleet including a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment in good repair for routine maintenance and emergency response. Repairs include, but are not limited to, engine repair or replacement, repairing and rebuilding brake systems, steering and suspension system components, differential and drive line components, servicing of automatic and manual transmissions, electrical and wiring systems; repair, maintain, fabricate, and install parts, components, and special use items. Keeping the fleet in safe operating condition is critical to the daily operation that NDOT performs and in effectively preserving and managing our assets and enabling safer operations. **THIS IS THE ENTRY LEVEL IN THE SERIES AND INCUMBENT MAY PROGRESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL AFTER  DISPLAYING SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE AND WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE APPOINTING AUTHORITY.**

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience in an automotive repair shop or service station; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and completion of a three-credit postsecondary course in vocational automotive mechanics; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

  • Incumbents are required to furnish their own mechanic's tools.
  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • A valid Class A or B commercial driver's license is required within six months of employment.
  • This position may require working alternate shifts and outside of traditional business hours. The hours for this position are subject to change depending on the needs of the appointing authority and may be five 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to learn the operating principles and repair techniques of light and medium automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to learn the proper use and care of hand tools and mechanical equipment used in equipment repair.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to write sufficient to prepare repair orders, requisition supplies, and document the condition of equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand repair orders, service manuals, operating system manuals and hydraulic and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to lift heavy components and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers
