Position Description

Conservation Staff Specialists assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures related to areas such as resource management, safety and training, fleet and inventory management, fire management and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation and protection.

 

This is primarily a field work position to assist the park with all conservation objectives. Aide with projects geared toward the park’s conservation, restoration, biology, and recreation objectives.  Position will perform a variety of duties that are subject to change.

 

Will actively participate in weed and other noxious vegetation inventory and removal. Will function as lead on numerous conservation plans, includes spraying, mechanical removal, handwork, and other means to combat invasive and noxious species, including weeds, Russian Olives, mosquitos. Conduct various vegetation projects, park beautification, irrigation projects, do field surveys, weed inventory, weed abatement, trail enhancements, tree health.  Seek and help administer conservation related grants and other funding opportunities within conservation program objectives, such as inventory and order chemicals and tools needed to achieve conservation objectives. Use GIS, Tremble units, Scout software to track weed inventory.  Organize and share weed inventory information with appropriate other agencies. May function as liaison with contractors or other businesses with conservation related projects (i.e, Manpower, Walker Basin Conservancy, Great Basin Institute, on trail building contractors, special organizations and events such as NICCA Mountain Bike group). 

 

Will work to propagate new plant materials, organize and maintain the park greenhouse.  Will actively assist the Park Supervisor with ranch lease management, rotation plans, water rights, fence maintenance, and protection of riparian areas.

 

Assist the Park with public outreach, education, special events.

This position is located at the Walker River State Recreation Area in Yerington Nevada.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, natural resource management, forestry, parks management, fire management or related field and two years of professional experience in a relevant resource management field that included assisting in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures; coordinating special grant programs and/or contracts; and coordinating training programs; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
  • The incumbent must obtain a Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Certificate within 12 months of appointment and maintain certification as a condition of continuing employment.

  • The incumbent must complete Department of Conservation and Natural Resources standard flight training and obtain a FAA Part 107 UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle)/drone pilot’s license within 18 months of appointment and maintain certifications as a condition of continuing employment. Demonstrate knowledge, proficiency, and sound judgement in safely planning and flying UAV missions.

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
